چکیده
Attractive forces between anisotropic inclusions in the membrane of a vesicle The fluctuation-induced interaction between two rod-like, rigid inclusions in a fluid vesicle is studied by means of canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. The vesicle membrane is represented by a triangulated network of hard spheres. Five rigidly connected hard spheres form rod-like inclusions that can leap between sites of the triangular network. Their effective interaction potential is computed as a function of mutual distance and angle of the inclusions. On account of the hard-core potential among these, the nature of the potential is purely entropic. Special precaution is taken to reduce lattice artifacts and the influence of finite-size effects due to the spherical geometry. Our results show that the effective potential is attractive and short-range compared with the rod length L. Its well depth is of the order of κ/10, where κ is the bending modulus.

Many-body forces between membrane inclusions: A new pattern-formation mechanism
The elastic interaction of membrane inclusions provides a unique physical realization of multibody forces. We derive an expression for the multibody curvature interaction between membrane proteins, and show that this interaction cannot be approximated by a pairwise additive theory. However, the interaction can be decomposed into a repulsive pairwise part and a nonpairwise part of similar magnit...

We study the collective behavior of inclusions inducing local anisotropic curvatures in a flexible fluid membrane. The N-body interaction energy for general anisotropic inclusions is calculated explicitly, including multi-body interactions. Long-range attractive interactions between inclusions are found to be sufficiently strong to induce aggregation. Monte Carlo simulations show a transition f...

Using a lattice model and a versatile thermodynamic integration scheme, we study the critical Casimir interactions between inclusions embedded in a two-dimensional critical binary mixtures. For single-domain inclusions we demonstrate that the interactions are very long range, and their magnitudes strongly depend on the affinity of the inclusions with the species in the binary mixtures, ranging ...
متن کاملThe Influence of Anisotropic Membrane Inclusions on Curvature Elastic Properties of Lipid Membranes
A membrane inclusion can be defined as a complex of protein or peptide and the surrounding significantly distorted lipids. We suggest a theoretical model that allows for the estimation of the influence of membrane inclusions on the curvature elastic properties of lipid membranes. Our treatment includes anisotropic inclusions whose energetics depends on their in-plane orientation within the memb...

Phospholipid membrane forming a closed surface and decorated with anisotropic inclusions is considered. The inclusions are free to redistribute laterally over the membrane and to orient in the plane of the membrane according to the local membrane curvature. A phenomenological expression for the energy of the interaction between an inclusion and local curvature of the surrounding membrane is pro...
